1832: William Wilson began building his house. He was a merchant, shipowner and whaler. Called his house Hobartville. Stables at rear. Coaches from Launceston to Hobart overnighted there. Kangaroos and emus were kept in fenced paddocks around the house.
1830’s: Brick wall in Commercial Road was built. It is high and very solid. Convicts made the bricks. At the time the government had a brickworks factory on the site of North Hobart Football Oval.
1837: William Wilson dies. His wife Grace remains in the house.
1844: Grace Wilson died. House goes to Grace’s brother: James Lord.
James Lord was a politician who hunted with hounds. Hobartville became a starting point for his hunts.
1881: James Lord dies. His wife Mary remains in the house.
1884: Mary Lord dies. Most of surrounding land is sold for residential development.
1887: School founded by local Quakers (Religious Society of Friends) begins in Warwick Street Hobart.
1888: Friends school buys Hobartville and adjoining five acres.
1889: Friends moves to present site. Due to a loan of $4000 from Hobart Baptists.
20th Century: The Friends School adds many buildings.
Today: The Friends School is a private co-educational day and boarding school. It is the largest Quaker school in the world.

A small charming building replete with pillars at the entrance to Friends Primary School.

1970: Mansion was demolished. Entrance lodge remains.
