Hobart City High School
At present Hobart City High School exists on two separate campuses. In 2021 one campus was Ogilvie High. The other campus was New Town High School. In 2022 the two separate schools were joined together.
1937: New Town Commercial High School begins in Letitia Street North Hobart. A month after opening the school moved to its present site.
1940: New Town Commercial High School renamed Ogilvie High School. In honour of Albert Ogilvie a former premier of Tasmania who passed away in 1939. For girls only.
1919: Hobart Junior Technical College begins.
1961: Hobart Junior Technical College renamed New Town High. For boys only.
1963: Boys and girls were educated separately. Ogilvie High is a girls’ only school. New Town High is a boys’ only school.
2022: Educating boys and girls together is the way to go. Ogilvie High merges with New Town High School. Hobart City High is co-educational. 2000 students and three campuses.
Adjacent to the Ogilvie Campus is New Town Oval and Creek Road netball courts.
New Town Oval home to New Town Cricket Club and a velodrome for cyclists. Home of the annual Bikes and Spikes Carnival.
Creek Road netball courts: Home to Southern Netball Association
1840: Convict gangs built a bridge crossing the New Town Rivulet. The bridge with stone arches survives today. It is well made and beautiful and visible under the intersection of New Town Road with Creek Road. There is a path beside the rivulet which gives a good view of the original bridge under the present bridge.
