Circa 1874: Tennis began in England.
1876: Tennis first played in Hobart. Club competitions began.
1878: Two tennis courts started at TCA on the Domain.
1892: Tasmanian Lawn Tennis Association began.
1893: Inaugural Tasmanian Open Championship.
1962: Notable Tasmanian Open Championship. Rod Laver defeated Neale Fraser.
1964: The Domain Tennis Centre begins and the Tasmanian Tennis Association moves to the Domain Tennis Centre.
1993: Women’s International begins in Hobart. A professional tournament for women held in January every year just prior to Australian Open held in Melbourne. Some of the best female tennis players in the world have made the trip to the Hobart International.
Successful Tasmanian Players. Helen Gourlay, Simon Youl and Richard Fromberg.
2005: The end of grass courts. Now all the courts are artificial: Plexicushion, artificial clay and synthetic grass.
The Domain Tennis Centre is home to tennis of all standards. Over 800 club members.
Regular weekly intra-club pennant competition: Different competition is available for players of different abilities. Most competition is Monday-Thursday evenings.
Regular weekly inter-club pennants against other Hobart clubs.
Regular weekly competitions for children.
Regular weekly social tennis. For all and anybody who turns up.
Casual hit: Normally possible to book a court, hire racquets and have a hit.
Coaching: Available for players of all abilities. Contact the club.
A clubhouse bar (Fish’s Bar) has stunning views down the river. Behind the bar you will probably be served by a very good tennis player.
A pro shop for all tennis related equipment. Sold to you by another very good tennis player.
The manager works full time. The manger is very accessible and approachable. The manger will tell you the best way for you to play tennis on these beautiful courts.
A café serving food and light eats for tennis and non-tennis players. Open to walkers on the Domain.
