On top of the Domain hill is a small weatherboard hut protected by a fence. Beside the hut are some radio masts. Inside the huts is some radio equipment.
1901: Australia was born. The Australian Antarctic Expedition was a big source of pride and helped to unite the new country. These radio masts helped unite Australia around scientific exploration. This expedition was followed a few years later by WW1. WW1 and the disaster at Anzac cove united the country around military disaster and military heroism.
1911: Douglas Mawson went to the Antarctic. Prior to that he erected a 184 foot high radio mast with the aim of radio communication with Macquarie Island. The Australian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1912) was the first Antarctic expedition to maintain radio contact with its country of origin. Hobart communicated with Cape Denison via an intermediate station at Macquarie Island.
1912- The coastal wireless station has continued to operate. Tas Maritime Radio and Coast Radio Hobart have monitored distress signals and broadcasts weather forecasts to boats
