1927: Lorna Brewer was born in NSW on a sheep property. She left school and joined the bank at the age of 16.
WW2: John Kennedy was a POW who worked on the Burma railway.
1946: Lorna Brewer was transferred to Hobart. She meets John Kennedy. Lorna was always known as Doone.
1949: John and Doone marry. Two children.
1970: John Kennedy served as Hobart alderman. There is a park in Newtown called the John Kennedy Park. Kennedy & sons operated in Salamanca Quarry from 1830s to 1949. They quarried and crushed rocks for roads and concrete. Salamanca Quarry is now Salamanca Square.
1982: Doone was elected to council. Her talents were recognised and she became Lord Mayor in 1986.
1986-1996: Lord Mayor of Hobart.
Doone Kennedy achieved a lot as an alderman. She was passionate about the funding and construction of the pool. She officially opened the pool and then jumped in.
I met her and went to meetings she chaired. She was competent and compassionate. She did her job well. She cared about the people she met.
2000: John Kennedy dies.
2014: Doone Kennedy dies.
Doone was christened as Lorna. She was always known as Doone. Nobody knows the aquatic centre as the Lorna Kennedy Aquatic Centre.
She was known as Doone because of the book Lorna Doone written by Richard Blackmore in 1869.
Lorna Doone: Set in 17th Century England. Lorna is a noble girl who is kidnapped by a group of bandits called Doones. One of the Doones Carver Doone planned on marrying Lorna against her will.
A local farmer John Ridd helps Lorna escape. A long story but eventually John and Lorna evade Carver Doone and marry.
Lorna only had the second name Doone when she was captured and held by the band of thugs called the Doones. She was born with a different name and married John Ridd.
Lorna had the surname Doone when held as a virtual prisoner by the Doones. The name Doone was probably not a name she was proud of.
