1834: Henry Colman Kesterton built Cliefden
1839: John Mezger purchased Cliefden. John Mezger was a publican who also owned Lauderdale in Risdon Road, Gatehouse’s mill and brewery on New Town Rivulet and Albert Park House.
1854: Mezger dies. House rented by estate.
1885: Cliefden purchased by Nisbet. Nisbet was the minister at New town Congregational Church.
1899: Nisbet dies.
1899: Cliefden purchased by Amily Anderson. She and her family lived there for many years.
1970’s: Units built at rear.
Today: Tasmanian Police Association.

1896: A competition to erect a public building.
1897: New Town Town Hall officially opened.
1908: New Town Town Board replaced by New Town Municipal council which was bigger.
1920: New Town Municipal Council becomes part of a bigger Hobart City Council. Building owned by HCC.

Former New Town Post Office
Post offices were operated by the Tasmanian Government up until Federation in 1901 when they became the responsibility of the Commonwealth of Australia. The original New Town Post Office was officially opened on the 1st January 1842.
The building was completed in 1891 and a postmistress was appointed by the postmaster-general.
The Post Offices served the New Town community for many years until the 1970s.
Today it is a café called Dispatch.
