1911-1914: The Australian Antarctic Expedition was the first Antarctic expedition to maintain radio contact with its country of origin. Hobart communicated with Cape Denison via an intermediate station at Macquarie Island. These radio masts helped unite Australia around scientific exploration. This expedition has been well covered in both books and films.
