Runnymede is a beautiful colonial house and garden.
1836: House built for built for Robert Pitcairn. The first lawyer to qualify in the colony. He called the house Cairn Lodge. He campaigned against transportation of convicts.
1850: Owned by Francis Russell Nixon. Anglican Bishop. He renamed it Bishopstowe.
1864: Owned by Captains Charles and James Bayley. He renamed it Runnymede after his favourite ship.
The Bayley family lived in the house for the next 100 years.
1963: Runnymede is owned by the National Trust.
The house is a museum about domestic colony life in 1860s.
Many maritime artifacts.
The garden contains historic trees, fruit trees, flowers, flowering shrubs, bulbs, heritage roses, herbs, and hedges.
Volunteers lead guided tours of house, garden and out buildings.
Runnymede is available for private hire. Many special events occur which are open to general public.
Runnymede is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am – 4pm.
