1923: The Zookeeper's Cottage was built as the residence for the curator of the Beaumaris Zoo. Zookeeper was Arthur Reid. Daughter was Alison Reid.
1930: Mr Reid was attacked in the cottage by burglars. Alison works as a fulltime unpaid assistant. Alison is notorious for taking her pet leopard for walks on the Domain.
1935: Mr Reid dies.
1937: Zoo closed. Council owns the Zookeeper's Cottage and the Beaumaris Zoo site.
The Zookeeper's Cottage was built in the Californian Bungalow style. The building sits on a stone base. Part of the building sits on a stone retaining wall.
The building is L shaped with gabled ends and an enclosed veranda on the north side. This veranda retains its original detailing. There is a with a corrugated iron roof.
The building comprises a series of face brick piers with timber below timber windows.
The front gable has a projecting bay window with shingles above and below. The entrance porch is under the main gable and there is no separate front veranda.
A small shed with a metal roof is at the rear of the building constructed of vertical dark stained timber planks.
